TMS: An alternative treatment for Major Depressive Disorder

TMS is an alternative, holistic treatment option for those suffering from treatment-resistant depression for whom medications have not been successful for. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation offers long-term relief for nearly 70% of patients. TMS Therapy was FDA approved in the United States in 2008 for treatment of Major Depressive Disorder in adult patients that have not received satisfactory results from medication alone. TMS was also approved for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) in 2018.

What is TMS?

What is TMS?

TMS is a series of quick, repetitive magnetic pulses that stimulate targeted neurons in the brain. These pulses provoke an electrical current in the brain, which activates the targeted nerve cells. This process increases oxygen and restores brain activity to normal levels. This treatment is a simple, in-office treatment with no systemic side effects that has proven to be effective in treating Major Depressive Disorder.

What should patients expect with TMS therapy?

TMS therapy is a simple and non-invasive therapy that allows patients the freedom and ability to return to their routine day to day activities. There is no downtime required after TMS therapy. Standard TMS therapy for depression treatment is covered by most insurance companies for adults who meet specific guidelines, such as trials of 2 or more antidepressant medications, a history of evidence-based psychotherapy and no contraindications to TMS therapy (such as metal in the head).
The typical course of TMS treatment consists of a total of 30-36 treatment sessions over a course of 6-7 weeks. Unlike treatment with medications, there are no systemic side effects such as GI upset, weight gain, sexual side effects, insomnia or other bothersome or debilitating symptoms.
